Process_Step: Process_Description: Arundo clumps throughout the watershed were mapped or recorded at three levels of precision to obtain net areas of Arundo infestations: 1. In relatively narrow riparian corridors with lengths less than one mile, Arundo clumps were counted by size class but not mapped on aerial photos. 2. In larger riparian areas, Arundo clumps were mapped discretely on aerial photos in cases where the Arundo primarily forms discrete stands of medium to large size. 3. In some larger areas containing numerous small or amalgamated Arundo clumps dispersed throughout other vegetation, the abundance of Arundo was mapped as a fraction of gross area outlined. Where mapped on aerial photos, generally at a scale of 1 inch = 250 ft, Arundo distributions were plotted on frosted transparent mylar sheets overlain on printed hardcopies of the digital aerial photos. By subsequently overlaying the annotated plastic sheets on graph paper, net areas occupied by Arundo were computed by counting grid squares. Although the larger clumps were distinguishable on the aerial photos, on-site examination was required for mapping Arundo under tree canopies. Abundances of other invasive exotic plants were estimated or counted or simply noted, but generally not mapped.
